Amazon River Dolphin

River dolphins make up some of the most endangered species in the world. There were once five species of river dolphins. Now, only four remain after the Yangtze River Dolphin, or Baiji, was declared to be functionally extinct in 2006. This was the first cetacean that has become extinct due to human causes (12).

The loss of the Baiji foreshadows the potential extinction of the remaining river dolphin species due to human impacts. The remaining species of river dolphins are in decline, and urgent action must be taken to protect the mysterious river dolphins.

This blog addresses the critical decline of river dolphins, the threats and causing factors, and the importance of saving these species. Conservation management actions will also be discussed, along with a research project proposal on factors that need to be studied in greater depth.
